Weaving Traditions: Industrial Visit To Pochampally

At Dhruva College of Design & Graduate Studies, we believe real learning happens when students step outside the classroom and immerse themselves in the real world. Our fashion design students recently took a deep dive into India’s textile heritage during an industrial visit to Pochampally, the iconic Silk City of Telangana.

Exploring the Legacy of Ikat

Pochampally isn’t only a place, it’s a living tradition. Known globally for its handwoven Ikat fabrics, this small town tells stories through its looms. Artisans in Pochampally use age-old techniques to dye and weave intricate patterns that have earned the region a Geographical Indication (GI) tag. Our students didn’t just observe the process, they experienced it.

Witnessing the Weaving Process Firsthand

During the visit, students:

  • Watched artisans demonstrate the tie-dye process that creates Pochampally’s distinctive patterns.
  • Observed the weaving of Ikat fabric, gaining insight into the precision and rhythm involved in handloom work.
  • Interacted with local weavers, learning about their creative journey, challenges, and passion for preserving their craft.

By engaging with artisans, students developed a newfound respect for the hands behind the threads.

Connecting Craft to Contemporary Fashion

Our visit to Pochampally helped students connect traditional techniques to their modern design education. They saw how slow, handcrafted processes contrast with fast fashion, and how sustainable, ethical design begins with understanding the roots.

Building Designers with Purpose

We train students to become designers, we shape them to become thoughtful creators. Experiences like the Pochampally visit help students build a deeper understanding in:

  • Craftsmanship
  • Cultural context
  • Responsible design practices

By learning from tradition, they gain tools to innovate for the future.

Conclusion:

At Dhruva College of Design & Graduate Studies, we weave education, tradition, and innovation into every thread of our students journey. Our visit to Pochampally not only enriched their understanding of heritage craftsmanship but also inspired them to create fashion that honors the past while shaping the future. By connecting with artisans and experiencing the artistry firsthand, our students are better equipped to design with purpose, creativity, and respect for timeless traditions. This immersive experience reinforces our commitment to nurturing designers who carry forward the legacy of Indian textiles with pride and creativity.
